Rank Tracking

Most small agencies don't need a dedicated rank tracker — the one bundled with your keyword tool is fine. Here's when to upgrade and what to pick.

Rank tracking is the most over-bought category in SEO tooling. Every agency thinks they need daily ranks for every keyword. Most don’t — weekly checks from your keyword tool’s bundled tracker are sufficient for client reporting.

What to buy

For most small agencies: nothing dedicated, yet. Use the rank tracker bundled with Ahrefs or Semrush. It’s weekly rather than daily, but for client retainer reporting, that’s fine.

When to upgrade:

  • AccuRanker ($129/mo) — daily ranks, the gold standard. Worth it if you’re in a competitive niche and need to see day-to-day volatility, or if a client specifically demands daily reporting.
  • BrightLocal ($39/mo) — non-negotiable for local SEO clients. The bundled trackers in Ahrefs/Semrush don’t do local pack tracking well.

Skip:

  • Standalone “budget” rank trackers ($15–$25/mo). They’re worse than what’s already bundled in your keyword tool.

Where this fits in the stack

Rank tracking sits downstream of keyword research (the keywords being tracked come from there) and feeds client reporting.

If you have 5+ clients and you’re spending Mondays building rank reports manually, the upgrade to AgencyAnalytics + a dedicated tracker pays for itself in two weeks. See the SEO tool stack for small agencies for full context.
